Artist Statement

I tell people all the time - art and music and organizing is not a hobby for me. It’s not a side hustle, it’s not an outlet, it’s a part of who I am. And I try to communicate and create in a world that doesn’t want me to be a part of it. In this space, I can create for myself, I can exist free from marginalization, discrimination, violence, microaggressions, constant misunderstanding, sexualization, politicization - the works. Creation in all ways is that space for me.

As an artist, I see my role is to create the space my community needs. A space that honors and welcomes them and their identities, that empowers and returns them to peace, that provides a moment of peace for marginalized people so they can just exist, just as they are.

Creation is not separate from action. We must preserve and reclaim what is important to us. This is in terms of subject, museums, lands, languages, artifacts, music, socio-political status, etc. I lean heavily on the value of nothing for us is without us.  As the original creatives on this wide wide world, it is imperative that we, marginalized people, take the space we need and lead through creation - whatever the medium or subject. Through my art and organizing, I try to share the resources and opportunities I have with others creatives, so we can create the world we need and deserve.
